Elizabethan Collar

Household buckets can be modified to make an Elizabethan Collar to help prevent stitches being licked and removed. A collar can also prevent pawing or scratching to the face and licking or chewing of other areas for example wounds, splints and bandages.

You may have a suitable container at home that can be used to make an Elizabethan Collar, for example:

Follow these simple instructions on how to make your collar:

  1. Cut the bottom out of the bucket

  2. Drill approximately 8 holes evenly around the base of the bucket

  3. Thread small loops of string through these holes and tie securely

  4. Thread the collar through these loops, slip it over the head and fasten the collar.

Most dogs and cats will tolerate the bucket quite well and will usually be able to eat and drink with the collar still in place. Allow a little time for your pet to adjust to the collar and it will soon cope with the minor inconvenience. Just remember a bucket is better than another anaesthetic to have stitches replaced.

If you are unable to make or place the bucket yourself we can supply custom made, plastic 'Elizabethan Collars'.
